Siren Rock Brewing Company

The extravaganza of Tuesday nights reached a new level, although not all in a high note, as it were.

Gathered around the proverbial cauldron of knowledge, twelve teams of diverse backgrounds and levels of inebriety joined up to claim our $25 Siren Rock Gift card and the second place of a Free Flight of Beer.

While the questions made the players rack their brains in search for the lint of an answer, they also made this host want to eat her own mic. Mispronunciations were the theme of the night, and in no small amount due to the second question of our very first round:

What bacteria is the best known member of genus Escherichia?

Impressively enough most of my teams knew the answer and earned the points to show for it. I still do not know how to pronounce that godforsaken word, my tongue simply refuses.

Regret paved the way through our 3rd round, particularly on question number 5

If someone responds DFIK, what are they trying to say?

You can imagine the quality of the answers, none of which can be said in polite company. Which is why, I suppose, most of you reprobates show up every Tuesday.

This is where the humorous recounting ends, and a mediocrely unpleasant subject that must be broached.begins.
As a hostess, I try my hardest to not only give the very best energy and show that I possibly can, but also to deal with dissent with equanimity and aplomb, albeit also sporting an acerbic edge, I am not a saint. I want you to bring your queries, since that engenders trust and also helps me know what you are thinking.

But, whilst I will always welcome feedback and the occasional “I googled this and found a different answer”, what transpired last week was several shades away from respectful and delved into unkindness.

Our second round, also our first theme round, ended in a bitter note when our fifth question was read:

Who's the only person ever to have the Baseball Hall of Fame five-year waiting period waived before his induction?

Now, as a rule of thumb I tend to not give answers to the questions in these writeups, due to the possibility of repetition - which can never be avoided- and my unwillingness to help people cheat. But at this time, I regretfully have to make an exception.

The reason why I am breaching this subject is due to the caliber of the reactions given when I read the answer, which has not changed and continues to be: Roberto Clemente.

Roberto Clemente was the only person entered into the hall of fame by waving the 5 year rule of indictment; which is what the question asks.
Lou Gehrig was indicted earlier, in December of 1939, by a special election, but his 5 years were not waived since this rule was not implemented until 1954.
Therefore, by the time that Clemente passed away in 1972 and was indicted in 1973, the 5-year waiting period was already in place.
Why am I bothering to write and explain this at all? Because unbeknownst to most of you, these questions and their subsequent answers are never written lightly, nor do they lack research. And while a host may not have the complete answer to your concerns right away, we trust implicitly on the people who are working tirelessly to make certain we never run out of fresh material, or updated answers.

All we ask is that you do the same.

Always yours,

Snapdragon.
