Football changed on Sept. 16, 2007. With 11:13 left on the clock in overtime, Oakland Raiders' kicker Sebastian Janikowski nails a 52-yard field goal. The Raiders rush the field in celebration. Unfortunately, the celebration is premature.
One second before the snap, Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan calls a timeout, rendering the successful kick moot. Janikowski resets, but his second attempt is no good; this kick nails the left upright. The Broncos respond with a successful drive, culminating in a game-winning 23-yard field goal from Jason Elam. (The Raiders opt against trying the tactic themselves, though they'd successfully employ it the following week against Cleveland.)
And with that, "icing the kicker" was born. Is it effective? Yes. And, maybe, not so much. Also, it depends.
Knowing this history, however, would lead the Samfords to a single-point (and perfect-card) Round 1 win. Regulars Nic and the Cages would go on to handedly take Round 2. Charlie's Angels and Stoopid dominated rounds three and four, respectively, before going head-to-head in a Round 5 tie-breaker in which the Angels would emerge successful. And to ice the cake, they'd take Round 6, too. Charlie would be proud.
