Why do I currently have the Wikipedia entries for "Sumer," the "Muslim conquest of the Levant," and the "Crusades" open? Well, it all started with the Assyrian empire.
I like to listen to (and cannot recommend enough) Paul Cooper's Fall of Civilizations podcast, a blow-by-blow exploration of the collapse of different societies throughout history. For me, this podcast is equal parts fascinating and dangerous, because after listening to each episode, the next thing I know it's 1:30 a.m. and I'm 40 tabs deep down several rabbit holes.

What does any of this have to do with what transpired last Thursday? Very little. But if you're anything like me — and you are reading a blog post recapping a trivia night, mind you, so I can't be terribly off target — you now have a new source for some rabbit holes of your own. You can thank me later.
So what did happen last week? For starters, we had one hell of a showout. Fourteen teams total competed, but try as they might, two were nearly impossible to beat. We laughed, we drank, we learned that the winners of Finland's Wife-Carrying World Championships (which is an actual event, hand to god) receive their wife's weight in beer. Nice.
