A steely, sweaty, sweatpantsed Iceman spinning a volleyball on his index finger. (The teeth chomp!) Or Doc Holliday emerging from the woods, taunting Johnny Ringo. "I'm your huckleberry." As Batman, Elvis whisper-singing "Heartbreak Hotel," or maybe even the less critically acclaimed — but cherished in my heart, at least — Simon Templar (among many names), saving cold fusion from the grips of those dirty commies.
I'll always remember Val Kilmer as Chris Shiherlis, the degenerate gambler who, with absolutely no hesitation, lays down a mesmerising barrage of suppressing fire in the pinnacle of all heist movies, 1995's "Heat."
In an interview, director Michael Mann says of Val, "They used some of the film of Val Kilmer firing forward, turning and firing back, and then doing a reload — they use that at Fort Bragg. '95% of you will not be able to fire as well as this actor.'"
We lost a giant today. Back to that in a second.
Clearly a kindred spirit of mine, RIP Val Kilmer aced Round 1 with a perfect card. Wester V followed up with a near-perfect card in Round 2 and a strong performance in Round 3 to take both. Round 4 fell to newcomers No More Calls. Three teams — RIP Val, No More Calls, and Nic and the Cages — faced off in a Kilmer-themed tie-breaker to decide Round 5. I asked the teams, "According to the internet, how many on-screen deaths appear in the 1995 crime thriller, 'Heat'?" No More Calls was closest to the pin; kudos to them. And Nic and the Cages rounded out the evening with a decisive Round 6 victory.
A lovely night all around, thank you to the seven teams who helped me memorialize a legendary performance, movie, and actor. RIP Val, indeed.
Congratulations to all of this week's winners:
