Let me tell you a story about narrowly avoiding disaster.
Trivia at Division is #SeriousBusiness. If you’ve been before — and I had, a couple handfuls of times — you’ve no doubt noticed: Regulars. Show. Up. Sure there’s plenty of literal and figurative space for a casual team (like the ones I’ve played on) to have a great time, but there’s a genuine competitive spirit permeating the air.
Let me tell you firsthand, experiencing this from the opposite side — asking rather than answering the questions — can be a little … intimidating. Layer one or two tiny mistakes like, say, adding several teams twice and not completely understanding what the “manual adjustment” button does, and now you're scrambling to figure out why some post-round scores aren’t adding up. All of the sudden, you’re looking at the clock like you’re escorting the West’s most dangerous outlaw to the station, his gang close on your heels, and discovering that the 3:10 to Yuma is running late.
I assure you, much like a recently commissioned sheriff, folks who play weeknight trivia expect the trains to run on time.
Tick, tick, tick. Oh no, oh god, oh no.
Thankfully, the trivia gods smile down in sympathy. You realize your mistakes, perform some quick back-of-envelope math, and type like a court stenographer taking an auctioneer’s testimony. The 3:10 arrives; you put Ben Wade on the train. (Oh, and you’re not shot several times by Wade’s number two as your teary-eyed son watches you slump to the ground and fade away.) Crisis averted.
That was Wednesday night.
I digress to reiterate: Trivia at Division is serious business. And so many of the same teams returning to a packed house, week after week, results in two of my favorite things: friendly rivalries and low-stakes-but-high-tension frivolity. Many thanks to everyone who showed up to compete this week, and a special thank-you to the kind souls sweet enough to overlook a novice host’s near-mishap. You’re good eggs, the lot of you.
Finally, a hearty congratulations to Wednesday night’s champs, Ringers by Request (48 points), second-place finishers Cheating Bastards (45 points), and in third with 39 points and the team with my favorite name of the night, Where the **** Is Stephen.
Trust me, I asked myself the same.
