After last Tuesday’s game, I am certain none of my players would cause me harm, but more than one team would toast my obituary with pleasure. I make friends with the ease of a barracuda, go me.
We had a stirring game with eleven teams filling seats for the entire night, even spilling onto the South Garden of Siren Rock to enjoy the warm weather and cooling breeze. For once Texas behaved with a magnanimousness, I am sure we will pay for later.
Our usual suspects were in attendance, and now that the gauntlet of practical jokes has been thrown, it seems we are in for continuous shenanigans. For those keeping score Brewsters played a joke on Steven from Let’s Get Quizzical (you can read all about it on the blog from 5/3/2022).
In a cunning display of “good things come to those who wait”, LGQ entreated the help of our Siren Rock crew to “steal” the usually reserved table for Brewsters. Needless to say, there was much ado and ribbing, I am certain the fireworks are far from over.
JDPB also returned for their 3rd night in a row, displaying a healthy habit of voyeuristic gluttony in having me say their team name out-loud at least once. Also, and in one of their many team iterations, Street Smart (known as Putin on the Blitz) came in spruced up and ready to rumble.
Quixotic as my teams are, the adventures of the night began on our 3rd round, when the fourth question asked
What colorful band's album spent 861 consecutive weeks on Billboard’s top album charts?
Never in the field of human conflict was so much been owed by so many to so few… letters.
Pandemonium ensued when I informed my players that none of them had answered correctly. Most teams stridently demanded for the slide with the question to be put up again, arguments on syntax and the usage of possessive apostrophe abounded.
Normally my ears tingle to hear their opinions, yet since going back not only meant putting us behind in time, but also a lack of trust in my reading, in true despotic fashion I named my price to do so in food: Bread Pudding. We Aren’t Smart jumped on that grenade, and the teams got to see the question again.
It is so sad to be right, but it feels oh so good.
The serendipitous moment of the night was thanks to the third question in our 5th round
What is your star sign if you are born on June 16th?
We had two crowd members who held that same birthday, belonging to Brewsters and Street Smart. One member from the duo Street Smart got shamed by his teammate, and was thus dubbed Sesame Street Smart, for not knowing the right answer.
Conways Witty Titties impressed the heck out of the company, as they were the only team able to answer the fifth question of round 6:
What breakfast food gets its name from the German word for "stirrup"?
They had a hidden weapon: One of their team members was from Germany.
Yet there was a serious moment in the night that I cannot gloss over. It came after our Trivia was done and everyone had dispersed, You’re a Quizzard Harry had joined us to alleviate the pain of losing a loved family member the day before. As painful as the story that they shared with me was, I hope that the week has been kind to them, and they have managed to find the light in their grief. Always treasure your loved ones folks.
After a healthy amount of groaning and my antics, the final score of the night was fairly tight:
JDPB came in 5th place with 35 points. Landing 4th with 37 points was Street Smart. Tied for second place, with both earning a flight of beer courtesy of Siren Rock, Let’s Get Quizzical and You’re a Quizzard Harry amassed 40 points each. And in first place with 42 points out of 48, Brewsters took the price of the night home.
Special recognition to Team Rob, Insane by Design, Mistletoe Belt Buckle, and Luced?, for joining the festivities.
As always, these nights would not be the pleasure that they are without the amazing Beertenders in residence: Bailey, Chrissy, Travis, and Chris.
Hope to see you all next Tuesday, at 7pm, to join in the ever-growing stories of “you see, wha’ha’happened was…”
Always yours,
PGSnapdragon.
